1st Grade took on an Associates team who were two points above them on the ladder, and Wests started well with two early tries to Mitch Hyde and Kiti Fuluna, one converted by Brad Linklater to go out to a 12-0 lead. Associates came back and scored 2 converted tries and a penalty for a 17-12 half time lead. Associates scored and converted just after the restart to go out to 24-12 and then Wests got back into the game with a converted try to Conrad Taupusi to take the score to 24-19, however almost from the restart Soaks scored again and took the score with the conversion to 31-19, however Wests came back with an unconverted try to Brad Linklater to make the score 31-24. In the dying moments Nathan Johnson scored for Wests to take the score to 31-29 with the conversion to come, however the attempt was not successful and the final whistle blew. Whilst scoring 5 tries to 4, goal kicking proved the difference and consigned us to another very close defeat, however the season is far from over and a big game is needed next weekend against unbeaten Kalamunda. Player of the day was Matt O'Brien.
2nd Grade kicked off against an Associates side who were on top of the ladder and hadn't lost a game. Wests started impressively and Soaks were not in the game with Wests paying them back for a heavy defeat they received in the opening game of the season, winning 41-0.
Tries to Elliot Kuhlmann-Hall, Willie Lio, Conrad Taupusi (2), Wais Varani, and Mike Reyland, whilst Craig Barrett kicked 4 conversions and a penalty. Players of the day were Luke Holmes and Regan Harray. A great win consolidating 2nds in the 4, however another tough game next week against Kalamunda.
3rd Grade took on Associates who were in third place on the ladder whilst Wests were in 5th spot. Wests started well and went out to a 13-0 lead early, however they took their foot off the gas and let Soaks in for a try for a 13-5 lead. After that they focussed again and went on to win 39-12, scoring 6 tries and putting themselves in the four. Try scorers were Claude Marchesani, Dan Broughton, Jason Ahipene, Steve Roberts, Hayden Hamilton and Aaron Broughton who also kicked 3 conversions and a penalty. Player of the day was Jason Ahipene. A good win and a tough one next week against Arks whose 5ths have a bye.
5th Grade played Joondalup Ancients and took an early lead to go out to 13-0 at half time, going on to win 20-7. A good performance and winning two in a row.
Under 20's played Nedlands Blue at the Foreshore, which was suppose to be Neddies 2nd team but as their first team won by default their second team was bolstered by a large number of first team players. Wests were always aware this could happen and had trained with this scenario in mind, so they took the field with a large dollop of confidence. Wests prevailed to win 21-12 with tries to Billy Cooper an ex Nedlands player, and Daniel Corsbie, whilst Peter Powderly kicked 1 conversion and 3 penalties. A great win consolidating first place on the ladder.
Under 18's played Joondalup at Rosalie Park and came out victors by 51 -14 scoring 9 tries. Try scorers were Mark Cornell, Nick McLennan, Hayden Neill (2), Trent Griffon, Heremiah Te Aute (2), Paeahi Tamati and Chase Chung, whilst Sheldon Tarawa kicked 2 conversions. Another good win by 18's and a big test next week when they take on the other unbeaten team, Perth Bayswater.
The Women's team played University and ended up winning 20-5. A big thankyou to Gus Bradley who reffed the game after the allocated ref didn't turn up. A good win and the Ladies are going well and will contest the finals.
All in all a good weekend for Wests, with the only downside the narrow loss by 1sts.
