Saturday 04th July saw Wests at Rosalie with 1st to 4ths playing Associates and Under 20’s taking on University in far better conditions than the previous two Saturdays and with 100 plus Ladies down at the ground for Ladies Day things were rocking.
1st Grade 1st Grade followed taking on Associates. The guys left the change rooms very fired up and played their best first half of the season and led 7-5 at halftime through a Luke Coleman try and a Peter Powderly conversion. Straight after the restart Peter Powderly kicked a penalty for Wests to lead 10-5, however a charged down kick on our goal line saw Soaks score and they went on to score 4 more tries with Wests going down 10-34.
A very good effort by the players, with tackling much better, however we made the mistake of not manning up in defence, letting Soaks create the overlap to score their tries and also not kicking down to the bottom corner as asked by the Coach at haltime. Player of the day was Kane McLeod.
The feedback from Past Players and Supporters was very positive after 1st Grade and it was good to hear people saying we are on the right track with what we are trying to achieve.
2nd Grade 2nds took the field against a Soaks side in 2nd spot on the ladder and were down 7-21 at halftime. They tried hard but ended up losing 14-34, with Anthony Tait and Dirk Funnekotter scoring tries and Craig Barrett kicking 2 conversions. Player of the day was Chris Miles (Millsey) in his first game back from injury after a number of weeks.
3rd Grade 3rds played an Associates side who were near the top of the ladder and let Soaks get out to a 12-0 lead, however Wests came back and got to 12-12, however Soaks managed to move away again and Wests lost 12-24. A good effort by the players who had Soaks worried. Try scorers were Peter Spratt and Scotty Blakemore, whilst Darren McVittie kicked a conversion. Player of the day was Hamish McGuinness.
4th Grade 4ths followed on starting 20 minutes later and took on a Soaks side who were 5th on the ladder and had a lot of old heads in the side. Wests went into this game in 2nd on the ladder and prevailed 29-15 scoring 4 tries and getting the bonus point. Try scorers were Eddie Seve, Brad Downey, Bo Namnoo and Scotty Blakemore who also kicked 3 conversions and a penalty. Player of the day was Steve Freeman.
Under 20's Under 20’s played top of the ladder University and were without 8 players, either injured, working or away with the Southern States Schoolboys side. Wests found the going tough and went down 0-20. Players of the day were Ben Heenan and Michael Parker. 20’s have been given a wake up call in the last 3 weeks and will need to start training and playing well if they want to take out a premiership.
