Saturday 21/06/08 saw Round 12, with Wests having their seven teams playing at 6 different locations, absolutely ridiculous situation in trying to organise backup for Grades and ferrying players from one game to another in these days of high fuel prices.
1st Grade played at Rockingham, trying to bring back the Tim Beale Trophy after it was lost for the first time last year. The first half was the worst most supporters have seen 1sts play, with them hardly winning a lineout due to poor throwing and making basic errors. Halftime was 17-3 to Rockingham. The second half was a better performance, however Rockingham held out to win 27-22, another close loss, but playing catch up didn't help. Try scorers were Kiti Fuluna, Mitch Hyde & Nathan Johnson, whilst Brad Linklater kicked 2 conversions and a penalty. Player of the day was Nathan Johnson.
2nd Grade also played at Rockingham and scored within the first 5 minutes, however they found Rocky 2nds no pushover and had long periods of play where they were held out from scoring. They ended up winning by 34-7 scoring 6 tries. Try scorers were Elliot Kuhlmann-Hall, Michael Flood, Hayden Head, Mark Lovatt and Mike Browne (2), whilst Peter Powderly backed up from Under 20's to kick 2 conversions.
3rd Grade played at Mandurah and were struggling for numbers and just had the bare fifteen players to start, with 1 other turning up from other completed games, during their game. Unfortunately due to the above, they were on the back foot at the start and lost 31-10. Try scorer was Jason Ahipene whilst Aaron Broughton kicked a conversion and a penalty. 3rds are still in the four but play Curtin next week who are in third place on percentage, so a big game is needed.
5th Grade played Curtin at Cutin and in their 4th win in a row won 27-19 getting 4 tries in the process and the bonus point. Try scorers were Jason Leatherby-Hohaia (2), Yasu Mishima and Brad Downey who also kicked a penalty, whilst Scott Blakemore kicked a conversion and a penalty. A bye next week guys and some of you will need to stand by for 3rds who have a must win game.
Under 20's played Nedlands Gold at the Foreshore. Nedlands came out of the blocks in a big hurry and were 10-0 up after 12 minutes. Some subs were made as the Wests front row were getting a hammering and that steadied the side. By halftime the score was 10-10. The second half started a bit like the first with Wests going down to a try to take the score to 15-10 to Nedlands, and then Wests kicked a penalty to make it 15-13. Nedlands then scored their 4th try to make it 20-13, but Wests came back and scored in the corner to make it 20-18. Wests then kicked a penalty with 6 minutes to go to take the lead for the first time 21-20. Nedlands then came back and bombed a try with two fast backline players up against two big fowards and their centre kicked the ball, however they repeated the same move a minute later and Wests still had the two big fowards defending and Nedlands scored in the corner to make it 25-21 to Nedlands with 2 minutes left. Wests came back from the kick-off and got possession, however instead of holding onto the ball it was kicked away and the final whistle went.
Under 18's played Wanneroo up at Kingsway and won 45-0. Try scorers were Lorenzo De Villiers, Trent Griffin (2), Hayden Neill, Jaques Leonzini, Mark Porges and Sheldon Tarawa who also kicked 5 conversions.
Women's team played Cottesloe at Perry Lakes and only had 14 players, and they lost another player early in the game to injury, so they played 13 against 15 for the rest of the game. At halftime it was 5-0 to Cottesloe, but in the last 10 minutes Cottesloe scored 3 tries and Wests lost by 22-0.
