Saturday 11th July saw Wests at Rockingham in 1sts, 2nds and Under 20’s who played ARKS, whilst 3rds had a bye and 4ths played at Mandurah against their 2nd team.

1st Grade: Played Rockingham with the Tim Beale Trophy up for grabs and went out quickly to a 14-5 lead courtesy of 2 tries scored by Chris Miles and Nathan Wooten. Wests went into halftime leading 25-19 with another try to Chris Miles and it looked like a possible first win of the season. The 2nd half started badly for Wests conceding 2 tries in the first 5 minutes and from there it was catch up football. Rockingham went out to 41-28, however with about 5 minutes to go Nathan Wooten scored again and the score was 35-41. Wests finished the stronger of the two teams and if there had been 10 minutes left may have been able to get across the line again, however time beat them. Peter Powderly kicked 3 conversions and 3 penalties. Player of the day was Chris Miles. Thanks must go to Geoff Little of G.L.Little & Associates and Lumsden Construction for putting up Player of the Day awards for both 2nd and 1st Grades, very much appreciated by the Club and the players.

2nd Grade: 2nds played Rockingham and in the 1st 40 min controlled territory and possession, however were behind on the scoreboard at halftime 5-7. Rockingham took control of the game in the 2nd half and Wests went down 5-24. Try scorer was David Pusey who played his first game of the season for Wests and player of the day was Hayden Head.

Under 20's: Played ARKS at Rockingham and knew they were in for a hard game with the ARKS players being a lot bigger than the Wests boys. ARKS scored first and converted and led 7-0 at halftime. A try to Jesse Mitchell brought the score back to 5-7 and then a penalty in front of the posts and about 37 metres out saw Graham Cooper land it to make it 8-7 to Wests. Wests scored again through Harley Balding and went out 13-7, with about 8 minutes to go. Wests came under a lot of pressure and coughed up the ball a number of times, however some strong tackling saw them hold on and everyone was glad to hear the final whistle, with the score in Wests favour 13-7. 20’s have a bye next week so it will give players a chance to recover from some niggling injuries.

4th Grade: 4ths played Mandurah’s ‘new’ second 4th Grade team down at Mandurah and came away with a 24-12 bonus point win to keep them in 2nd place on the ladder. Try scorers were Bo Namnoo, Dan Pearton (2) and Kim Grace while Scott Blakemore kicked 2 conversions.
