ROUND 14 RESULTS

Round 14 saw Wests at home on Saturday 05/07/2008, with most teams playing Cottesloe.

1st Grade: 1sts took the field knowing they were 4 points clear of Cottesloe on the ladder. In a game of see-sawing fortunes, where it seemed as soon as one team scored the other would go down the other end and do the same, Wests went into halftime leading 13-10. Cottesloe came back in the 2nd half and were first to score, but like the first half, Wests replied straight away. The game continued in the same vein and Wests went into the last 10 minutes leading 37-36. Willie Lio made a superb break with a big dummy pass and was pulled down just short of the line beside the posts, the move very deserving of a try but it wasn't to be. Wests held on after a few scares, with Cottesloe players dropping the ball with Wests under pressure. After a nerve racking 5 to 7 minutes the final whistle went with Wests holding on for the win. Try scorers were Kiti Fuluna, Nathan Johnson, Tim Riley, Willie Lio and Brad Linklater who also kicked 3 conversions and 2 penalties. Players of the day were Willie Lio and Brad Linklater whose line kicking was superb.

2nd Grade: 2nds knew they needed a bonus point win and started very well, scoring early and keeping the pressure on. By halftime they led 21-7 with J.P. converting all 3 first half tries. The second half continued on like the first with 2nds going on to record a great win 52 - 14 and put themselves in 3rd spot on the ladder, one point behind second. Try scorers were Nathan Wooten, Murray Skea, Luke Coleman (2), Rod Fejo, Luigi de Figueiredo (2) and Mike Holden whilst Craig Barrett kicked 2 conversions and John Paul Apulu kicked 4 conversions. Player of the day was Luke Coleman.

3rd Grade: 3rds took on an unbeaten Cottesloe side that was packed with former 1st Graders, many of whom are still capable of playing 1st Grade. Cottesloe didn't have it all their own way and at half time the score was nil all. Wests bombed a possible try with a three man overlap when the fullback took the tackle instead of moving the ball and it proved expensive. Wests held out to 3-8 until the last play of the game letting Cottesloe in again for a converted try to take the final score to Cottesloe 15 Wests 3. Aaron Broughton kicked 1 penalty. Player of the day for Wests was Steve Roberts. Award of Excellence to Chris Hocking.

5th Grade: 5ths took on a Bunbury side that was equal on the ladder with them. Bunbury's 4ths had a bye so no doubt they had bolstered their team with 4th Graders. However it did not stop them from calling for uncontested scrums from the first scrum packed. Wests missed a few kickable penalties that could have kept them in the game and went down 15-3. Scorer was Scott Blakemore with a penalty. Player of the day was Eddie Seve.

Under 20's: 20's started the day on 3rd spot on the ladder taking on 5th placed Cottesloe. This was a must win game for 20's, however at half-time they were down 6-5 after long periods defending. The second half Cottesloe scored twice and went on to win 18-5. Player of the day was Liam McMahon. 20's have got some tough games coming up, so need to get their combinations sorted and their application right if they wish to achieve their goal of making the four.

Under 18's: 18's won by default from Bunbury who notified the Club at 10-00am on game day.

Women: No games due to the State Team being at the National Champs.
