ROUND 15 RESULTS

Saturday 1st August saw Wests Grade Teams (1st - 4th) up at Kingsway playing Wanneroo whilst Under 20’s had a bye.

1st Grade Played Wanneroo with Under 20’s player Billy Cooper starting at fullback. Wests started slowly and Wanneroo went out to a 12-0 lead. Wests came back with a try to Sam Paton out wide, which Nathan Huntley converted to make it 12-7.Wanneroo came back and Wests got a cruel bounce of the ball and it bounced into the hands of the Wanneroo winger to score and with the conversion made it 19-7 to Wanneroo at halftime.

Wests scored 1st after the break with Billy Cooper scoring out wide and once again Nathan Huntley added the conversion to make it 19-14 to Wanneroo. Wanneroo then went in for a converted try taking the score to 26-14, however Wests weren’t finished and Anthony Tait scored, however it was not converted, making it 26-19 to Wanneroo. Wanneroo scored again, not converting making it 31-19 and minutes after the restart Doug ‘Bunya’ Coradine scooted down the far touchline evading tacklers and scoring 5 metres out from the posts in probably the try of the day. Nathan Huntley converted and the score was 31–26 which stayed that way until full time. A great effort by the Wests players and was a moral victory. As Coach Wayne Gibson said after the match, we had stripped the Club back to its bare bones this season in regards to our 1st Grade and it has taken until the 2nd Round to put in winning and competitive performances, blooding last years Under 20’s players and giving this years Under 20’s an opportunity and it’s all coming together. We look forward to being competitive right from the start of next season. A great performance and 2 bonus points on the ladder.

2nd Grade Took on Wanneroo on Field 1 and played a tight first half again with Willie Lio scoring a try and Craig Barrett converting. However in the 2nd half due to some dropped ball and missed first tackles they went down 8 -29. Whilst the game was tight and certainly not one sided, due to the number of different players playing for them, 2nds lacked continuity and balance, however they never gave up.

3rd Grade Started the afternoon off down on Field 2 playing a Wanneroo side that was vying for 4th spot on the ladder. Wests started well and went out to a 3 nil lead from a penalty by Dan Broughton, however Wanneroo came back and scored a converted try and penalty to make it 3-10. Keith Jones then ran from halfway to break through tackles and score about 5 metres out from the upright which Dan Broughton converted to make it 10-10 at halftime. Wanneroo scored after the break to go out to 15-10 and then they kicked a penalty to make it 18-10. West came back to score a try to Darryl McVitty and Dan Broughton followed shortly after with a penalty kick making it 18-18 with 12 minutes to go. With around 6 minutes left Wanneroo scored and converted to make it 25-18. Wests came under a lot of pressure as Wanneroo were chasing the bonus point, but Wests managed to hold on and got a bonus point themselves which keeps them above Perth Bayswater on the ladder on percentage. A gutsy effort by 3rds.

4th Grade Followed on wanting to consolidate their 2nd spot on the ladder and led at times throughout the game, but couldn’t stop Wanneroo coming back at them each time after they had scored. In an arm wrestle Wanneroo scored late in the game to make the final score 21-21. Wests apparently had a chance to win it but a dropped ball didn’t help their cause. 4ths are 7 points clear of 3rd on the ladder, but will have to keep winning if they want to remain there. Try scorers were Joe Wijohn, Kurt Belsham, and Brad Downey, whilst Scott Blakemore kicked 2 and Bo Namnoo 1 conversions.
