ROUND 16 RESULTS
Saturday 08th August saw all Wests teams at Rosalie Park with Under 20’s playing Curtin Uni., 3rds & 4ths playing Southern Lions and 1st and 2nds playing Palmyra.
1st Grade followed on playing a Paly side that had been the Competition front runner early in the season and had beaten Wests by 40 plus points in the first round. Wests went out to a 3-0 lead from a Nathan Huntley penalty, however Paly came back and scored a converted try to lead 10-3. Nathan Huntley then kicked 2 more penalties to make the score at half time 10-9 to Paly. The second half was a bit of an arm wrestle, with Wests dominating for most of the first 25 minutes. Nathan Huntley then scored a good try with about 15 minutes left but couldn’t convert it, so it was Wests up 14-10. Paly scored out wide with about 5 to go to take a 1 point lead and right on full time ‘scored’ again out wide in the corner, although players from both sides said the ball had gone out and then bounced back in, but obviously Touch Judge Kim Short needs a trip to OPSM as he told Ref. Steve Chapman that it all was ok, so he awarded the try to make it a Paly win 20-14. A gutsy effort by the Wests players who were competitive in all facets of play around the field and can hold there heads very high. I know the Paly Coach Dave was very relieved to hear the final whistle - he told me, and also said that Wests are very much on the right track as to our young player program.
2nd Grade played Palmyra on Field 1 with both sides in equal spot on the ladder. They started well scoring the first try which was converted and by halftime led 14-3. Paly came back in the second half and scored 2 converted tries whilst Wests had scored one. In the last few minutes of the game Paly got a penalty out in front about 40 metres out which they kicked and Wests went down 19-20. Try scorers were Alby Jefferies, Mark Ahern, who was also Player of the Day and Mike Reyland whilst Craig Barrett kicked 2 conversions.
Under 20s were meant to start the days proceedings, however the Curtin Manager rocked up at 11-30am and told us they were defaulting, which left a number of people very p---ed off, as our 20’s Captain had heard on Thursday night they were going to default.
3rd Grade ended up playing on Field 1 against Southern Lions and they withstood a lot of pressure in the first 20 minutes holding out until just before halftime when the Lions scored and converted. Wests came back with a try to Darren Weafer, however the Lions scored another converted try to win 14-5. Player of the Day for thirds was Kieran Dent.
4th Grade also played Southern Lions up on Field 2 looking for a big win to consolidate second spot on the ladder. They started off on fire and had their bonus point by halftime, with some outstanding back play, with tries to Steve ‘Kathy’ Freeman (2), Kurt Belsham
(2) who was also Player of the Day, Dan Pearton and Brad Downey (2), whilst Scotty Blakemore kicked 6 conversions. A very good win and a tough battle coming up next week-end out at Kalamunda against a Kala side who are chasing 4th spot on the ladder.
