ROUND 16 RESULTS
Round 16 saw Wests 1sts, 2nds and 4ths head to Hartfield Park to play Kalamunda, whilst 3rds and Colts headed to John Dunn Oval to play ARKS.
Colts took on an ARKS side that were 1 place and 5 points above them on the ladder and were expecting a tough game. Much to Coach Gus Brabley's disgust, ARKS called for uncontested scrums before the game started, thereby nullifying the Wests pack scrummaging skills. Colts went on to win the game 22 points to 5, however missing out on the bonus point, but should claim second spot on the ladder before seasons end.
3rds took on an ARKS side that was top of the ladder and at half time were down 12 points to nil. However in a fairly even second half where both side scored 14 points each, 3rds went down by 26 points to 14. Tries to Adam Arkle and Tristan Abbott. Many thanks to the Colts players who stood by for 3rds.
4ths started the preceedings at Kalamunda, in a must win game to keep their finals hopes alive. They went to half time at 5 points all, however early in the second half they managed to land 2 penalties to go out to 11 points to 5. They had three opportunities to close out the game with three penalties missed from in front and inside the 22. Kalamunda knew they'd been let off the hook and with three minutes to go headed down field and from a lineout drive powered over for a try about 10 metres in from touch. Their kicker slotted the conversion on the final whistle to make the final score Kalamunda 12, Wests 11. 4ths chances of making the four have now disappeared until next season.
2nds followed on knowing 5 points was needed to keep them in the hunt for 2nd spot on the ladder, with Kalmunda one place behind Wests, but a number of points back. Things did not start well with Kalamunda scoring early and converting for a 7-0 lead. Wests came back into it with CB kicking a penalty, and then Wests seemed to click to go out to a 20 points to 7 half time lead. The second half was fairly even, however Wests prevailed to the score of 32 points to 15, getting the bonus point for 4 tries, Josh Vodo scoring 2 of them. A big one this Saturday taking on 2nd placed Associates, one we must win. Thanks to the 4th Graders who stood by for 2nds and had a run.
1sts followed on knowing that a win was needed to keep their faint finals hopes alive. Wests lost both 1st five Simon Daff and 2nd five Luigi De Figuerrado to injury in the first 10 minutes, whilst half Scott Batters also did a hamstring but played on after having his leg bound up and moved out to first five. Kalamunda scored first and by half time in a see saw encounter Wests lead by 2 points. The second half was a tight tussle and with minutes to go Wests kicked a penalty to make it 24 -21 in their favour. From the restart Wests failed to control the ball and turned it over and from the ensuing ruck one of the Kalamunda players picked up and drove and in a reflex action one of the Wests players caught him high around the neck and it was an immediate penalty in front of the posts and just outside the 22, which the Kalamunda kicker calmly converted to make the final score 24-24. A lot of fun continued in the clubrooms with the Annual "Miss Kalamunda Contest" being held.
