1st Grade took on a new look Kalamunda out at Hartfield, the home side having recruited heavily. The rain had stopped by the start of the game, however parts of the field held a lot of surface water. Wests took an early lead through a Brad Linklater penalty goal, however 10 minutes later Kala scored under the bar and converted for a 7-3 lead. Kala then went on to kick a penalty to go to a 10-3 lead, but a try to Kiti Fuluna brought the score back to 10-8. Kala then scored again and converted to go out to 17-8, but Wests came back and scored a converted try to Nathan Johnston, converted by Brad Linklater to make it 17-15 to Kala with minutes to go, however that was to be the final score. Player of the day was Chris Jackson, whilst a number of U20's players came on from the bench, being Tom DeBuf, Sam Coggin, Graham Cooper, whilst Mitch Hyde started. A tough game which we were right in until the end, ball retention needs to be worked on and I'm sure we'll have a 5 competition points win very shortly.
2nds took the field with it still raining but the blue sky and sun was beginning to shine through. An early try to winger Chris Hocking, well set up by Nathan Wooten and Mike Reylands (Razor), with C.B. slotting the conversion. Kala scored a penalty to make it 7-3, then C.B. slotted 2 more penalties to make it 13-3 and then Kala scored a try 15 minutes from the end and that was the final score it being 13-8. Player of the day was Nathan Wooten, but a good effort from 2nds who need some more training time together and they will become a formidable unit.
Under 18's took the field in heavy rain which lasted throughout their whole match. The Wests players didn't let that worry them and went out to a 14-0 nil lead after 15 minutes and by halftime led 21 -5. The team continued on in the 2nd half and won by 38-5, tries to Lewis Flood, Tiri Tuatai, Heremaia Te Aute (2), Hayden Neill, and Trent Griffin who also kicked 4 conversions. Player of the day was Heremaia Te Aute, and this was a great result played in terrible conditions, well done guys.
The rest of the Club played out at Arks, and as I wasn't in attendance I will just give scores and scorers.
U20's won 29-5 which was a good bonus point win as the ARKS team were no pushover I was told. Try Scorers were Sam Cogin, Ben Heenan, Keith Bradley, Peter Powderly plus 2 conversions and Jack Cook.
3rds went down 21-15, both sides scoring 2 tries apiece, ARKS kicking 2 more penalties than Wests. Tries to Claude Marchesani and Mike Reylands, whilst Paul Connelly kicked a conversion and a penalty. From what I hear a number of players didn't front, maybe it was the rain, however that's no excuse to let your teammates down. Thanks to Colt's player Jared Lahooti who started as prop as well as those who stood by from colts, 5th and 2nds. Player of the day was Ritchie Hyde, with good games from Byron and Floody.
5ths also apparently struggled from lack of numbers and went down 20-0. After having numbers at training the previous Thursday maybe it was the rain and the trip out to Kelmscott that kept them away, not helping their teammates cause.
