Saturday 2nd May saw Wests host Rockingham in 1sts, 2nds and Under 18’s whilst Under 20’s were out at ARKS and 3rds & 4ths had a bye.
Under 18’s kicked off the day, and with some players not turning up on the Saturday after training on Thursday night it made things difficult again, with Wests just managing to put 15 players on the field.
Wests started well and scored the first try, however at half time were down 12-13. After the restart Wests got a penalty in front of the posts but elected to take a quick tap and turned the ball over, missing out on the chance to take the lead. Wests lost their No.10, Walter Koteka to injury 5 minutes before half time and had to play with 14 men as there were no reserves. This told in the second half as Rockingham put on some good passing moves and scored 3 times to take the game 32-12. Try scorers were Lorenzo DeVilliers and Trent Griffin, whilst Walter Koteka kicked a conversion.
Under 20’s played ARKS out at John Dunn Oval and lost their hooker Harley Balding with a damaged shoulder in the first 10 minutes and then lost their new player Chris Bullen with a broken collarbone, so were struggling for numbers.
However their quality told and they ran out winners by 19-5.Try scorers were Doug 'Bunya' Carradine, Matt Tau and Joe Fiso who also kicked 2 conversions.
2nds played Rockingham at Rosalie and in a game of see-sawing fortunes saw the final result end in 24-24 draw. Wests had a makeshift team with a number of 3rds and 4ths turning out due to injuries, and didn’t help their cause to win by missing a number of first up tackles. Try scorers were Nathan Wooten, Sam Paton and Paul Connelly whilst Peter Powderly kicked 3 conversions and a penalty. Player of the day was Murray Skea.
1st Grade followed on also playing Rockingham and went out quickly to a 9-0 lead courtesy of 3 penalties kicked by Graham Cooper. Wests scored two more tries in the first half to Jason Frost and Heremaia TeAute with Graham Cooper converting one of them, and just prior to halftime led 21-7, however they let Rocky in right on halftime to make the score 21-14. The second half saw Rocky score 2 more tries, 1 converted and also kicking a penalty near the end to win 29-21 with Wests missing out on the bonus point. A good first half effort by Wests, however we must be able to sustain it for 80 minutes. Player of the day was Heremaia TeAute.
