1st Grade played University at Rosalie, looking for their first win of the season after 2 draws and a loss. Wests started well and went out to a 24-0 halftime lead, having scored 4 tries and secured the bonus point. Early in the 2nd half we were down to 14 men again with another sin bin and Uni scored 2 tries in quick succession with pick and drives close to the line. Wests came back and scored 2 more tries, one to pacey winger "Kimi" who went almost the length of the field and the final score ended up with Wests winning 39-10. The game was not helped by some very inconsistent Referee decisions, however there is still a lot of room for improvement and we can build on our current 5th spot on the Competition ladder. Tries to Matt O'Brien, Mitch Hyde, Nathan Johnston, "Kimi" (2) and Benson Auva'a, whilst Brad Linklater kicked 3 conversions and a penalty. Player of the day was "Kimi".
2nd Grade also played Uni. and in a game with a lot of niggle, won by 53-0, consolidating 4th spot on the ladder. Tries were scored by Mark Livesey, Nathan McNamara, Nathan Wooten (2), John Paul Apulu (2) who also kicked 3 conversions, Rod Fejo, Joel Dykes and Matt Chong-Sue, whilst Craig Barrett also kicked a conversion. The game was called off 7 or so minutes early due to the niggle. Player of the day was John Paul Apulu.
3rd Grade played Curtin and knew they'd be in for a tough one. Wests started well and had good control of the game, however both sides matched each other in the scoring department. With 15 minutes to go it was 14-14 and against the run of play Curtin broke out of their 22 and went down the field and scored to make it 14-19. Wests came back strongly, however they were not helped by the Curtin prop making out he'd broken his shoulder and they called for uncontested scrums while Wests were hot on attack. As much as they went for the line Wests could not get over and the final whistle went, which sent the Curtin prop into raptures waving his arms above his head etc., so much for an injury!!!! Whilst Wests probably had the better individual players out there on the day, it showed up that their lack of practicing together cost them the game as there was too much individual play and not enough teamwork. With the players in the side, this team if they practiced together could beat anyone on the day in this grade. Scorers were Alex Bruce and Chris Hocking, whilst Paul Connelly kicked two conversions. 3rds also lost Tristan Abbott with a broken leg in the first minutes of the game. We wish him well in his recovery from surgery. Player of the day was new member of the Club Liki Lealamisa.
5th Grade played Uni and lost on the bell to a penalty kick and went down 13-12. Player of the day was Dan Pearton.
Under 20's also played Uni and in a tight contest came out on top 20-12 which puts them in 4th spot on the ladder. Try scorers were Michael Parker (2), Graham Cooper, whilst Peter Powderly kicked a conversion and a penalty. This side seems to be improving with every game and has good numbers turning up. A tough one next week against ladder leaders Cottesloe.
Under 18's had a bye.
Women: The ladies played Uni also and had a good win by 25-5, scoring 5 tries and getting the bonus point. Try scorers were Lita Atutolu, Eddie Faletolu, Rita Saseve (2) and Ema Silulu. A good win by an enthusiastic team.
