Saturday 09th May, Wests had 6 teams playing at 3 different venues.

Under 18’s started the day off playing Joondalup up at Iluka Sports Complex taking on a Joondalup side that had 22 players. Due to Wesley College having a bye in the PSA we had 16 players available for 18’s, so we had a reserve for the first time this season. Wests started well and scored first and dominated from then on and that’s how the game continued with the Wests scrum performing well supplying quality ball for the backs, while Nick Corsbie’s throws into the lineout found Chris McLean superbly. Wests led 17-5 at halftime and went on to record a bonus point win 34-10. Try scorers were Nick Corsbie (2), Tiri Sadler, Chris McLean, and Trent Griffin who also kicked a conversion, whilst Walter Koteka kicked 2 conversions and a penalty. Players who had an outstanding game were Lorenzo DeVilliers, Alex Wolman, Nick Corsbie & Chris McLean, however it was a great team effort that got them the win.

Under 20’s followed on from 18’s taking on a Joondalup side that matched then in numbers and size but not in the skill department. Wests cruised to a 51-3 win, scoring 9 tries, with tries to Jesse Mitchell, Ricky Unasa, Billy Cooper (2), Joe Keys (2), Nick Kehoe, Ben Heenan who also kicked a conversion and Joe Fiso who also kicked 2 conversions. A very convincing win from 20’s taking them to 4th spot on the ladder.

3rds played Curtin out at Curtin and after being 5 all at halftime, they couldn’t hold Curtin out in the last 20 minutes of the 2nd half with Curtin winning 36-5. Try scorer for 3rds was Hamish McGuinness. From all reports 3rds didn’t give up but it is hard when you are playing a Club’s number 1 team, not really a level playing field.

4ths also played Curtin prior to 3rds and recorded their 4th win of the season, winning 13-5, probably their best start to a season for some time. Try scorer was the Coach’s son, Dan Pearton who got two, whilst Scotty Blakemore kicked a penalty.
Keep it up 4ths.

2nds played University at McGillivray and at halftime were down 7-10. Uni scored and then kicked a penalty straight after the break and threatened to open up, however Wests came back and closed the game up to 17-18. Wests then scored two more tries to go out to a 27-18 lead, however a dropped ball in their 22 let Uni in under the posts just before full time to bring the score to 27-25 in Wests favour with about 2 minutes left. Wests managed to hold Uni out and recored another win. Try scorers were Keith Bradley and Mike ‘Razor’ Reyland (2), whilst Craig Barrett kicked 3 conversions and 2 penalties. A hard fought win, with some outstanding drives by big Alby Jefferies.

1sts followed on also playing Uni and after last weeks close loss were looking for a win, however it wasn’t to be as Uni went into halftime leading 40-10, due to a lot of missed tackles. The second half was more even with Wests going down 22-59 at the final whistle. Wests never gave up which was encouraging and at games end we had three 18 year olds playing, one 19 year old, two 20 year olds, five 21 year olds and two 23 year olds, so it bodes well for the future. Try scorers were Olly Coles, Mike Marshall and Dan Corsbie who had a very good game whilst Graham Cooper kicked 2 conversions and a penalty. The comment from our supporters on the side line was that Wests never gave up. They are a young team and as it’s a three year ‘project’ to develop this young talent, we have only played 4 games out of 54, so we have a long way to go.
