Round 5 had all teams except U20's at Cottesloe.
1st Grade: This was a must win game for 1sts to keep us in the hunt for the four. Wests started poorly conceding the first 5 lineouts on their own throw and then went down 0-3 to a penalty that was missed the first time but was given again after one of Wests players charged for some unknown reason. The game itself was nothing to write home about with both teams guilty of a number of errors and the ref (John Hill) having another one of his pedantic displays. Wests then for the fifth game in a row had one of their players sin-binned for a professional foul and Cottesloe scored 12 unanswered points, meaning Wests were chasing the game for the rest of the match. With 20 minutes to go Wests came back to 17-22, however a Cottesloe field goal and a penalty each to both sides took the score to 28-20 with around 8 minutes left. Wests scored again beside the posts in the dying minutes and converted and the final whistle went, Wests 27, Cottesloe 28. Whilst there were some very dubious refereering decisions, a number of Wests players just didn't turn up on the day and left a lot of the work to their teammates and that just can't be done.
Try scorers were Ben White (2) and John-Paul Apulu, whilst Brad Linklater kicked 3 conversions and 2 penalties.
We are still in the hunt for 4th place on the ladder due to a number of results over the weekend so a big effort is needed against Wanneroo in 2 weeks time after the general bye next weekend.
2nd Grade: started well and went out to a 17-0 lead after 15 minutes, however they took their foot off the pedal and let Cott. come back to 17-12. In a game of end to end plays Wests kept their nose in front but Cott. kept them honest, until the last 10 minutes when Wests opened out their lead and won 31-19. Try scorers were Nathan Wooten, Mark Lovatt, Mike Reyland, Tavita Avelua (2), whilst Craig Barrett kicked 2 conversions and John-Paul Apulu kicked 1. Another good win for 2nds and consolidates their spot in the 4.
3rd Grade: took on a Cott. side that was top of the table and got hammered 38-8. Whilst 3rds have some very talented players out there including a number of premiership winning ex 1st Graders, until they start training together as a team they will find it difficult to play as a team. With the players in this side to be beaten by that score was not a true reflection of the playing abilities of this group, and there are plenty of positives available if they start training together.
5th Grade: played Cott. on the No.2 ground and went down 12-8 in a close contest. Try scorer was Kyle Stuart, whilst Daniel Pearton kicked a field goal, these two probably being the youngest players in the side!!!!
Under 20's: played Associates Green at Nedlands in an 11.15am kick-off. Wests dominated a scrappy match and came out on top 24-0. Once again both sides had to put up with a ref who didn't play advantage, didn't seem to know the rules when Soaks called for uncontested scrums and generally was very pedantic. Try scorers for Wests were Ben Heenan, Keith Bradley, Robert Clauson, Vincent Apulu who also kicked a conversion, whilst Graham Cooper also kicked a conversion. A good bonus point win and this side is getting better each game it plays.
Under 18's: won by forfeit 25-0 from Bunbury.
The Women: were due to play Bunbury, however Bunbury pulled out of the comp., so they were redrawn to play Cottesloe, however after Bunbury pulled out the ladies decided to go away for the long weekend so this game has been postponed to played at a later date.
