Wests were at home for Round 6 on Sat. 10/05/08 against various opposition.
1st Grade played Wanneroo knowing a win could take them into the top 4. They started well and at the break led 16-8. However the 2nd half was a see saw affair with the lead changing hands a number of times. Wests went out to a 24-22 lead with minutes left on the clock, however from the restart they didn't get out of their red zone and the failure to do so cost them the match, as a penalty was given away on the 22, about 10 metres in and the Wanneroo sub coolly slotted the goal to go out to a 25-24 lead. From our restart Wanneroo hoofed the ball down into Wests territory and within minutes the final whistle went. Tries to Mitch Hyde (2), also Player of the Day and Brad Linklater who also kicked 3 penalties. Whilst we didn't win, at least our discipline was good with no player receiving any cards, and looking at our season so far our biggest loss has been by 2 points, so I feel we can still achieve our goal of the four, we just have to learn to hold onto a lead.
2nd Grade also played Wanneroo who were about 7th on the ladder whilst Wests were in 2nd. However Wanneroo's 7th spot belied their playing capabilities and kept Wests honest through the first half with a score of 6-5 at halftime. The 2nd half Wests scored a try and converted plus 2 penalty goals to one penalty to Wanneroo, giving Wests a 19-8 win. Tries to Matt Chong-Sue, whilst John-Paul Apulu kicked 1 conversion and 4 penalties. Muzza was player of the day having a good game at half back.
3rd Grade played Joondalup which was going to be a tough ask as this is their Club's top side and went down by 8-17, with Dan Broughton scoring a try and Chris Hocking kicking a penalty. Player of the day was Ritchie Hyde. Next week Neddies, who are not much above you on the ladder, it's time for a win!!!!!
5th Grade also played Joondalup and in a tight contest lost 10-16. No scorers were entered on the teamsheet so don't know who got the points, however keep at it guys, remember every win helps towards to Club Championship.
Under 20's played Cottesloe who were on top of the ladder while Wests were in 5th spot on percentage. In a game of end to end proportions, Wests were down 13-8 for a large part of the second half, until Jesse Mitchell made a break down the right hand side from the 22, out-sprinting the defence and scoring under the posts, converted by Peter Powderly making it Wests 15 Cott. 13 with about 3 minutes left. From the restart Wests didn't get out of their half and Cott. were awarded a penalty on the 22, about 10 metres in from touch, which could have won them the game, however their kicker sent it wide and the final whistle went. A very good win taking them to 3rd on the ladder on percentage. Tries were also scored by Vincent Apulu and Peter Powderly also kicked a penalty.
Under 18's also played Cottesloe, with Wests top on the ladder and Cott. in 5th place. Wests had had 3 weeks off due to forfeits and byes, plus Aranmore had had their school ball the night before, so the team were a little rusty. However they went on to win 18-0, with tries to Trent Griffin and Coree Mahu, whilst Sheldon Tarawa kicked a conversion and 2 penalties. Wests stay on top of the ladder on percentage, ahead of Perth Bayswater.
Womens played Perth Bayswater and due to only having 12 players against Baysies 15 plus reserves, they went down
0-62 to a very slick Perth Bayswater side. We need all members of the Club to try and source a few more players for the Ladies team as the numbers they have there are very keen players, so just need a few more people.
