Round 6 saw 4 Wests teams at McGillivray Oval playing University, whilst 3rd Grade played Curtin out at Edinburgh Oval. It was a successful weekend for the Club with all 5 Grades winning and 4 of those sides achieving a bonus point.
Colts kicked off the day playing a Universities side (UWA & Curtin), that was a few points further up the ladder from them. Both sides played controlled rugby for the first 10 minutes and then Wests scored and by half time led 12 points to 5. In the 2nd half Wests turned it on and after a Daniel Corsbie 65metre run to score they finished up winning 31 points to 5, claiming a bonus point. Good games from Dan Corsbie, Semi Soqoiwasa, Peter Powderly, Keith Bradley, Rhys King, Tom DeBuf, whilst the rest of the team toiled admirably, a good win leading to more.
4ths played on the adjacent field at the same time, with Coach Dean McKee looking for a win that would set this team on their way. They started with a few old heads from past 1st Grades, in Dwayne Henderson and Greg Plimmer, which added a bit of steel to the side. Tries were scored by Mike Toy, Brad Downey and one other (not put on the team sheet), whilst Brad Downey and Richard Jones kicked conversions with 4ths winning 17 points to 12.
3rds played Curtin at Curtin and although trailing 17 points to 8 part way through the 2nd half, they recovered to win 25 points to 17. Tries to Steve Roberts, Tristan Abbott, Dan Broughton & Nick Wooten gave them the bonus point whilst Wayne Balding kicked a penalty, and Steve Roberts 1 conversion. Losing both Dan Broughton & Irish to the sin bin for 10 min only made their task that much harder. A top effort by 3rds and hopefully will lead onto further wins, as this team is capable of making the four. Must improve the discipline!
2nds played Uni and after a scrappy first half where they led by 12 points to 3, turned it on in the second half to come out on top 33 points to 3 and claim a bonus point. Good games from Pugs, Pat Byron, Chris Miles, Jarrod McGreevey, Captain Regan Harray, whilst Plimms came off the bench and scored a try. Top effort 2nds, you are going well, keep it up.
1sts took the field, knowing that in past seasons Uni had been a bogey side, however after plenty of territory and possession only led 12 points to nil at half time. Uni came back into the match 15 minutes into the second half scoring a converted try to make it 12 points to 7 and it was game on. The Wests team lifted and went on to score 2 more tries, 1 converted to go out to 24 - 7. However a dubious advantage decision in injury time led to a Uni penalty and they crashed over from 5 metres out and scored and converted with the final score being 24 points to 14 to Wests. Good games from Luigi de Figueiredo, Kane Allen, Dave Von Kotze, Kiti Fuluna, Josh Vodo, Elliot Keuhlmann-Hall, whilst major injuries occurred to Mike Holden, Tamiano Sakaria, and Brent Currie, keep the physios busy you 3.
