Round 7, Saturday 6 June - All teams away

Colts 18s: 18’s started the proceedings at Palmyra, however we only had 12 players to take the field, whilst Paly had a squad of 26, so Wests were behind the 8 ball to start. Wests went down to 11 men 5 minutes before half time due to Nick Corsbie injuring his shoulder and at halftime Wests were only down 0-17. In the second half we lost Lorenzo De Villiers after 15 minutes, so were down to 10 players against 15 plus Paly had made a number of replacements, however the Wests players wanted to keep playing and never gave up, showing a real commitment to their mates and the Jersey. Nick MeLennon led the side well, whilst Lorenzo & Michael Egan in the forwards never stopped trying. Chesney Rose, James Morrison & Trent Griffen all went close to scoring during the game, whilst Walter Koteka at Number 10 kicked to his usual high standard. The final score was 39-0 to Paly however our Wests players showed incredible guts and courage and if we had the numbers we’d be right up there with the leaders.

2nd Grade: 2nds followed on and went out to a 17-0 lead with a penalty try, a try to Simon Demergue and Craig Barrett kicking 2 conversions and a penalty. However with a few injuries and a thin bench they let Paly back into it and were relieved to hear the final whistle with Paly on attack and Wests leading 17-13. 2nds are still in 4th spot on the ladder and are going well.

1st Grade: 1sts took the field against a Paly side that were a lot bigger than our guys, however Wests opened up a 6 point lead after 15 minutes thanks to two Peter Powderly penalties. Paly then opened up and ran through some missed tackles and at half time the score was 41-6. Wests were a lot more competitive in the 2nd half, with Anthony Tait scoring a try, which Peter Powderly converted and the final score was Palmyra 58 Wests 13. With a few first graders away for work or pleasure or injured the guys that took the field showed some good patches of Rugby and the team can hold it’s head high as it competed well.

Colts 20s: 20’s played Curtin at Curtin Uni losing 2 players to injury in the early part of the game, in Nick Kehoe with a gouged eye and Mark Cornell with a split tongue. However 20’s powered away to win 58-0, with tries to Ricky Unasa (2), Joe Fiso, Doug ‘Bunya’ Carradine (3), Younger Morgan, Luke Stephens (2), and James Keys, whilst Billy Cooper kicked 2 conversions and Ben Heenan kicked one. 20’s are equal 1st on the ladder and are going well.

4th Grade: 4ths played Southern Lions at Murdoch and scored four tries in a bonus point 29-17 win. Try scorers were Richard Jones, Scott Blakemore who also kicked 2 conversions, and Brad Downey who scored 2 tries, and kicked a conversion and a penalty. A good win for 4ths which puts them in 2nd on the ladder.

3rd Grade: 3rds followed on from 4ths also playing Southern Lions, effectively playing their ‘1st Grade’ and as told to me by Tom McAllister their Manager, the Lions forward pack was very big and mobile and were hard to stop. 3rds put up a strong fight, however went down 19-38, scoring 3 tries, with Tristan Abbott scoring one and Darren Weafer converting. The other scorers were not listed on the teamsheet.
