All Wests teams played at Tompkins Park on Saturday 31 May, playing Palmyra, whilst 5th Grade played Southern Lions.
1st Grade: 1sts took on a Palmyra team who were 0 from 8, but were not going to be pushovers. Paly came out very fired up whilst the Wests players seemed to be just the opposite. At half time Paly led 10-6 and Wests knew that they had a fight on their hands, however an intercept try and conversion to Paly just after half time didn't help their cause with the score going to Paly 17 Wests 6. Wests came back with tries to Chris Miles and Mitch Hyde, both not converted, whilst Paly kicked a penalty to take the score to Paly 20 Wests 16, which was the final score. Looking from the sideline it seemed that the Wests players just didn't fire on the day and it was a case of another one that got away.
2nd Grade: 2nds went out knowing a bonus point win would consolidate their spot in the four. After a slow start Wests got on the board with tries to Dave Louw, Murray Skea and Deon Daniels (at 46 years of age), plus a conversion and 2 penalties to Craig Barrett, they missed out on the fourth try and bonus point, but won 23-0.
3rd Grade: 3rds took the field knowing a bonus point win and other results going their way could put them in the four. They went out to a 14-0 lead with tries to Richard Hyde and Paul Connelly, both converted by Aaron Broughton, however Paly scored a converted try before half time whilst Aaron Broughton also kicked a penalty making half time Wests 17 Paly 7. After the break Dan Broughton scored with Aaron converting and then Paly scored an unconverted try taking the score to 24-12. Wests were desperate for the 4th try and in the last play of the game Steve Roberts went over converted by Aaron Broughton to take the final score to Wests 31 Paly 12. A good win.
5th Grade: 5ths played Southern Lions, not having a Ref at the start, however one was soon rounded up. In a game of end to end stuff, Wests prevailed 14 points to 8, being down 8-7 with 15 minutes to go, however right on the bell Joji Soqoiwasa scored under the posts, converted by Dan Pearton, who had earlier converted Leighton Toby's try. A good win guys, nice to win on the bell, instead of being beaten on it.
Under 20's: U20's won by default from Southern Lions.
Under 18's: Under 18's were first up on the No1. ground in a game that was almost called up due to the heavy thunder and lightening 10 minutes before the start. Wests started slow and by half time had scored 3 tries, with the ref calling halftime 5 minutes early due to the weather turning bad again. The second half started with the weather clearing and Wests went on to score two more tries in showery weather, to get the bonus point. Try scorers were Nick McLennon, Mark Cornell, Micheal Egan, Hayden Neill, and Trent Griffen whilst Sheldon Tarawa kicked 4 conversions. A good win by a well drilled side, marching their way to the finals.
Women: The Women's competition had a general bye this week-end.
