Saturday 20th June saw Wests 1st to 4ths at Nedlands in very windy squally conditions whilst Under 20’s were out at Kalamunda.
1st Grade: 1st Grade followed on taking on a strong Nedlands side that had new Force recruit Tim Fairbrother in the front row, while Wests lost Heremaia Te Aute prior to kickoff with an injury and had a few others out through injury also. Billy Cooper started his first game for 1sts at inside centre and played well, however Nedlands bigger pack dominated and Wests went down by 5-79, although they never gave up. Try scorer for Wests was Under 20 player Shane Lowe. Player of the day for Wests was Captain Jason Leatherby-Hohaia who played his heart out and led from the front.
2nd Grade: 2nd Grade took the field against an unbeaten Neddies side and played with the wind in the first half, however it wasn’t used enough and Nedlands spent a lot of time in Wests half. At halftime it was 10-15, however Nedlands used the wind to their advantage in the 2nd half and they went on to win 42-10. The spectacle was not helped by some very wishy washy refereeing decisions and ended with both a Neddies and Wests prop being sent off. Try scorers for Wests were Simon Demergue who ran almost from his own 22, weaving through the Nedlands side to score a great try and Craig Barrett.
3rd Grade: 3rd Grade followed on with an earlier kick off than usual, but unfortunately went down 7-49. Try scorer was Tristan Abbott and Darren McVitty kicked a conversion.
4th Grade: 4th Grade kicked off early at Nedlands due to Nedlands having two 3rds and two 4ths sides. Wests played into the strong wind in the first half and held Neddies to 0-0 at halftime, however they lost the plot in the 2nd half playing with the wind and went down 14-26. Try scorers were Daikyo Kajimura and Scott Blakemore who also kicked 2 conversions.
U20's: Under 20s played Kalamunda out at Hartfield and lost 12-17. Apparently from reports our guys just “didn’t show up on the day” and were lucky to get 12 points, maybe it’s a good wake up call.
