WATER RUNS DOWNHILL - U20s Round 10
Šand sure as eggs we knew when we went to the Foreshore for the Round 10 clash with Nedlands Blue that things would not be as it should be. Nedlands Gold had a forfeit from Lions so it was no surprise they wheeled out their No.1 team for this vital clash. Wests were on the back of the round 9 forfeit from the Lions and we had huge injury worries with the loss of Keith Bradley, Russell Chapman, Ben Heenan, Charl Gale plus the loss of Michael Parker who was rested in deference to his WA Schoolboys team selection. We resolved during the week to stick to our guns and not be sidetracked by these doubtful shenanigans. Graham Cooper led the side in the absence of Skipper Keith Bradley and Billy Cooper stepped up to the plate as the new No. 10. Billy certainly had a point to prove against his old Club and he made it in spades with a dominant and confident display. From the outset it was a tough day where defensive pressure was going to be the key. Beau O'Brien was moved to Lock due to injury and he worked hard for the first 20 minutes when he was replaced by the in-form Jack Cook. The scrum was under pressure until we steadied ourselves and for the first 20 minutes it was an arm wrestle. Billy Cooper made a great tackle and Jesse Mitchell secured good ball in the lineout. We were missing first up tackles and this needed attention. Open side flanker Kane Della Vedova celebrated his under 20 State Squad selection with a storming run. From a penalty at the 16th minute Peter Powderly slotted it for a 3-0 lead. A good break on the left side saw Dan Corsbie fire the ball to Powderly who fed it on to fullback Wais Varani. Centre Sam Paton threw a long ball and Graham Cooper kicked intelligently into the corner where we forced the lineout. Solid play. Caleb Conder took a great grab to re-inforce his dominant lock play. Billy Cooper passed crisply to Corsbie who sliced through for a great try. Powderly nailed the conversion and we were up 10-0 at the 22 minute mark. Cook took the field at this point but the scrum took time to settle. Nedlands had started the game with at least 8 of their first team squad and they began to build pressure. A poor offload from a tackle by Varani led to Neddies speedster Jayden De Vorms racing in for a converted try. 10-7. This led to Wests lifting the intensity and from a scrum 30 metres out on the left side Graham Cooper took the ball right, drifted, dummied and stepped his way through the defence to then off load to the supporting Billy Cooper who scored a great try. Powderly missed the conversion and we led 15-7 at the break.

We talked about confidence and our line speed in defence. Assistant Coach Vaughn Hyde-Smith summarised the stats and pointed out the missed tackles and turnovers at the breakdown. Liam O'Connor was replaced by Brady McCaughn and Hooker Liam McMahon switched to Prop. Wais missed a tackle but Caleb Conder was again strong with a dynamic hit up which was secured by Brady. Both packs exchanged pleasantries as the game heated up. Nedlands had injected 6 more first team players into the battle at the break and they were determined to steal the points. The Official was apparently overawed by the intensity of the battle and it showed with erratic and poor rulings. Both teams suffered with the loss of advantage that should have led to tries. Again this issue always leads to frustration in an intense battle. Wests were rewarded with a penalty after some strong defence and Peter Powderly slotted the 3 pointer to put us at 18-7. Nedlands were not to be outdone and from a charge down from a Varani clearing kick they scored to make it 18-12. In a baffling decision No8 Rhys King was binned for an alleged shoulder charge. New Boy Sioeli Nanai replaced Wais and in a reshuffle he went to 12 while Corsbie shifted back to fullback. Nedlands applied more pressure but we took our chance when it came and Powderly again nailed a penalty to put us out by 9 at 21-12. With only a minute or two left a simple scuffle between Liam McMahon and a Neddies forward led to a shock issuing of a Red Card to Liam. The incident appeared to be simple push and shove. The game ended on a sour note with the referee failing to allow Nedlands to take the penalty he had awarded. This was difficult to understand but was an example of the pattern of game management. Best players were Graham Cooper, Billy Cooper, Jarrod Lahooti, Caleb Conder, Rhys King, Brady McCaughn, Peter Powderly and Dan Corsbie. Next week we take on the powerhouse Perth Bayswater at Rosalie in one of our rare games with the rest of the Club. Scores: Wests 21 Corsbie and B. Cooper Tries Powderly 3 Penalties, 1 Conversion defeated Nedlands 12.

Regards,

Gus Bradley, Coach

RUMBLE AT ROSALIE! by Gus Bradley, Colts Coach Round 4
Sam Cogin led the Wests Subiaco Under 20¹s and took on close rival Universities at Rosalie in Round 4 determined to grab a top four spot from Uni and continue our gradual improvement. This turned out to be a tough and at times spiteful encounter with us needing to demonstrate discipline and restraint in the face of some questionable tactics. The first 20 minutes was a tough grind with neither side giving ground. Our lineout struggled to maintain timing and communication and the tall Uni pack made inroads. At the scrum we were more steady and the inclusion of powerful Lock Jack Cook added grunt to the pack. Ben Heenan was shuffled to blind side flanker to replace the ill Rhys King. In the backs versatile Sam Paton debuted at centre while Billy Cooper continues to show gradual return of confidence following a shoulder injury. Halves Graham Cooper and Keith Bradley were strong in leadership and laying out the game plan. Bradley fired through a number of cagey grubbers that caught Uni napping and almost saw left wing Peter Powderly score. Caleb Conder, Jarrod Lahooti and Ben Heenan were tough on the ball while No8 Michael Parker began to run from the base of a solid scrum. It was Uni who scored first, with a poor midfield defensive effort, seeing them break two tackles and score close to the posts for a 7-0 lead. Wests struck back with a well worked try to Parker and some close calls in attack that could have seen us score a couple of tries. We went in at half time at 7-5. Strong play was shown by fullback Daniel Corsbie and Flanker Jesse Mitchell. The first half saw a sickening late shoulder charge on Fly Half Keith Bradley some time after he slotted through a pin-point kick. It resulted in Keith going to the blood bin and being replaced by Vinnie Apulu. Unfortunately the Referee was not well sighted and only a yellow card was the result for Uni. At half time we spoke about minimising errors and penalties caused by frustration and improving our line speed in defence. We determined to punish Uni by upping the contest at the tackle and in the set piece.

Rob Clauson was replaced on the wing by new speedster Tavita Auelut who has arrived from NSW. The forward pack rose to the challenge with the Scrum beginning to dominate the wilting University 8. Front rowers Chapman, Cogin, Lahooti and later Mike Lane overcame the Uni pack and Michael Parker scored from a tremendous push over try. The scrum was awesome and during the second half decimated the Uni pack. Scrum half, Graham Cooper, put in a well weighted chip from around half way, chased and regathered. Coops then sped to the corner, outlasted the defenders and slid over for a 5 pointer. In strong wind Powderly slotted the conversion from the side line. Uni scored again and Wests were leading 17-12. Replacements Vinnie Apulu and Beau O¹Brien performed well and with the scrum now dominating we were able to build pressure in the Uni quarter. Daniel Corsbie ran well from full back and centre chiming in well. Peter Powderly featured in some powerful runs on the flank and showed the benefit of the extra time and space out wide. Peter took advantage of two penalties and in the fluky strong crosswind was able to slot the second for an important 8 point lead with 5 minutes left on the clock. Halves Cooper and Bradley steadied the ship and we saw the clock wind down to a solid win in trying conditions. The Club song was belted out in the change rooms.

The team also awaits the arrival of the talented Queensland Rep, Wais Varani, who will join us at training on Tuesday. Next week we take on Associates Green in an early 11.15am kick off at the Foreshore Reserve, Nedlands (Be there at 10am). Three players who have been disappointed recently by lack of match time will get their opportunities in this game to impress the selection panel. Our Club selection policy means that other Under 20 players will gain valuable experience and fight their way into the starting team via the 5th and 3rd Grade teams while 4 others are currently selected to start in Premier Grade. Best players today were Caleb Conder, Michael Parker, Graham Cooper, Ben Heenan, Jarrod Lahooti, Sam Cogin, Russell Chapman (Our front row) and Keith Bradley. Scores Wests 20 (Parker 2 and G. Cooper tries; Powderly conversion and penalty defeated Uni 12.

Gus Bradley, Under 20/Academy Coach.

UGLY WIN - BEAUTIFUL DAY! by Gus Bradley, Colts Coach Round 3
Wests Under 20 played round 3 at Rosalie and took on reigning Premiers Joondalup Brothers in good dry conditions. Without Prop Tom Debuf (Premier Grade) the front row of Lahooti, Cogin, Chapman and McCaughan matched and then overcame the Brothers 8. The win was ugly because we were not able to get into our rhythm around the edges and we constantly battled for supremacy for long periods of time. Forwards win matches and grit and determination were not lacking and were needed as Brothers constantly attacked, ran sharp angles and probed for weaknesses. Clearing kicks did not find touch and the pressure grew. An attack on the left saw Joondalup catch 3 ³fatties² on the left and they scooted in for a 5 pointer (5-0). From the kick-off we were again caught out of line in the midfield but cover defence saved the day. The forwards upped the ante with Blindside flanker Rhys ³Road train² King again awesome, turning over ball and securing a penalty. The scrum began to dominate with great drive from locks Caleb Conder and Ben Heenan. Jack Cook replaced the ill Jesse Mitchell and added further grunt. A long range penalty was coolly slotted by wing Peter Powderly (5-3). Again there were long periods of attack and defence from both sides as we battled for field position and supremacy at the tackle. Corsbie played well in the mid field and later as custodian. A lineout formed about 35 metres out and Conder grabbed a great ball. The ensuing maul drove deep into the 22 until King and Heenan broke away and finally Heenan wowed the crowd with a spinning powerful run to dot down over the line (8-5). At half time we spoke about momentum and building pressure. Billy Cooper replaced Sweeney at the back.

Enter Russell 'Goat' Chapman and the Wests front row! The much vaunted Brothers pack was drilled and No. 8 Michael Parker and King combined to drive the ball down the right. Half Graham 'Coops' Cooper responded to the call and deftly chipped for speedy pivot Keith Bradley to skirt the defence snap up the bouncing ball and draw the final defenders before off loading to winger Charl Gale to race over for a finely worked try. Powderly converted and we stretched the lead to 15-5. Brothers were not to be denied and hit back straight after the kick-off, racing down the left through 2 poor tackle efforts to score under the posts. 15-12. It was time to empty the bench with Captain Sam Cogin replaced at hooker by Brady McCaughan, Vinnie Apulu replaced by Rob Clauson, Charl Gale replaced by Sam Paton and Mike Lane deputising for Parker who was off for blood. The arm wrestle continued and again we were served brilliantly by the super subs who maintained the standard and pressure. Cooper and Bradley controlled play and Bradley let fly with a pin point touch finder which rolled into touch 5 metres from the corner post. The much improved lineout functioned well and Conder took a great grab from an accurate McCaughan throw. King, Heenan and Lahooti hammered away at the line and Brothers were forced to submit a penalty. Powderly slotted the 3 pointer and the clock ran down to a memorable 18-12 victory and a strong rendition of the Club Song. Next week we kick off at 12.30pm against Universities at McGilivray Field in John XX111 Avenue Claremont. Again the Under 20¹s were well represented with Adli and McCrone playing 3rds, Heenan, Paton, McCaughan in 2nds and Cogin, Bradley and Parker taking the field in Premier Grade (see photo). Well done to all. Best Players King, Heenan, Bradley, Cooper, Corsbie and the ³front row² Scores: Wests 18 Gale Heenan tries Powderly 2 penalties and 1 conversion beat Joondalup 12. In other games Nedlands Gold 36 beat Arks 7; Perth 60 Lions 0; Associate Gold 27 Nedlands Blue 0; Associates Green 12 Universities 28; and Cottesloe had the bye.

ABC = Bounce Back! by Gus Bradley, Colts Coach Round 2
What a difference a week makes with Wests benefiting from a week of soul searching, discipline and defence. The ³ABC² factor - a better Attitude combined with the return of scrum half Keith Bradley from Premier Grade to Fly Half in the 20¹s and Graham Cooper at the scrum base was decisive. This provided direction and discipline in attack and defence. The Scrum Doctor, Vaughn Boultwood, worked hard early in the week on our ³timing² and this paid off with a powerful scrum and great platform. A deluge of 43mm of rain did not dampen our resolve. From the outset it was rugged with no quarter asked or given in strong tackles and hard running. Blindside flanker Rhys King combined with back-rowers Michael Parker, Jesse Mitchell and Steve Salvarinov to hammer the massive ARKS pack while the locks, Conder, Heenan and Cook were great at the lineout and in general play.

Keith Bradley guided the midfield in attack and defence and solid running and defence was demonstrated by Apulu, Corsbie and Paton. Out wide Powderly revelled in the extra space, coming into the backline and creating havoc. O¹Brien and Sweeney were steady at the back. Hooker and Captain, Sam Cogin, overcame a bout of the flu to lead from the front and post the first try from a good lead up on the left side. ARKS were not to be denied and struck back in broken play from an error to score. We had vowed to control the game, maintain possession and build pressure. Assistant Coach Vaughn Hyde-Smith provided the Œstats¹ at half time and talked about minimising errors, playing for territory and being patient. The second half showed the benefit with strong and continued pressure finally overcoming the ARKS pack. The injection of Cook, Lahooti, Salvarinov and Lane into the forward pack and Paton, Sweeney and Gale in the backs did not alter the tempo. Wests ran in 5 tries, secured the bonus point and now look forward to a challenging battle against reigning Premiers, Joondalup, at Rosalie.

Welcome to new players in Steve Salvarinov and Billy-J Cooper. Congratulations to new Prop, Adli, who played a strong game in 5th grade and to the other 12 or more Under 20¹s who stood by for 3rd, 2nd and Premier Grade. In particular congratulations to Mitch Hyde, Graham Cooper and Sam Cogin who have now joined Matt O¹Brien, Chris Jackson, Keith Bradley, Tom Debuf and Michael Parker as Under 20 players stepping up to Premier Grade. We now look forward to the return from injury of Brady McCaughan, Liam O¹Connor and Kane Della Vedova. Special thanks to Lyn Bradley who acted as Registrar and Manager for the Under 20¹s for the first two weeks while Manager Mike Tunley attended NZ due to the sad passing of his Mum. Our thoughts go to Mike.

Best players Rhys King, Tom Debuf, Jesse Mitchell, Keith Bradley and Graham Cooper. Scores: Wests 29 Cogin, Heenan, Bradley, Powderly and Cook tries; Powderly 2 conversions Defeated ARKS 5.

INJURIES
We suffered two serious injuries on Saturday, Johan Jansie Van Rensburg, Hendrick's brother, who only arrived from South Africa 3 or so weeks before, suffered a bad neck injury playing 2nd Grade and was in considerable pain, necessitating going by Ambulance to hospital. It turns out he damaged ligaments in his neck and will take 3 weeks or so to recover, so on behalf of the Club I wish him a speedy recovery. Whilst Johan was being loaded into the Ambulance we had a call from the other field that someone had broken their leg. This turned out to be Andrew Robertson (Doobs), who had tripped over a tacklers legs and got caught up and broke both his fibula and tibia in his right leg. Another Ambulance had to be called and Andrew was taken to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and was operated on Sunday morning. I have spoken with him and he is in good spirits, and realises his playing days may be over, however he will be involved in the Club where he can. We all wish Andrew a speedy recovery and hope to see both him and Johan on the sidelines soon.

MASSAGE TABLE - CLUB NEEDS SOMEONE TO PICK UP (NOR)
I have a wooden massage table at work that they are looking at throwing out. It could replace the table in the change rooms at Wests and be a permanent table for in there which would give more room - such as putting bags underneath the table when getting ready.

It needs to be picked up from Unit 10, 1 the gateway, Edgewater - its near Spotlight and Anaconda near Joondalup ECU. The physio practice is open from 7am to 7pm.

If you know someone that can pick it up before next Tuesday and take it to the club rooms, get them to call 9301 4203 or 0402 511 599.

Jo, Physio

WESTS SUBIACO TEST MATCH LUNCHEON - 8TH JUNE 2007
The tradition of hosting a Wests Subiaco Test Match Luncheon continued in 2007 – the support of those present was terrific and early feedback is that all are looking forward to another luncheon ‘experience’ next year.

The day started with Host Gary Sampson outlining the days’ events then acknowledgements by Graham Brash and President Kevin Hays to those who assisted in putting the day together plus the recognition of our fantastic club sponsors. Our guests were top caliber – headed by Chris “Buddha” Handy and the legendary Wallaby Tim Horan.

Chris “Buddha” Handy, our Master of Ceremonies, was sensational. Not only is his knowledge of the game immense he draws everyone in with his humour and sheer enthusiasm. Thank you Buddha for your contribution to the day – immense.

Tim Horan – We had Tim with us in 2004 and he supported Wests again this year. Tim is one of the all time greats of international rugby. He played in two winning Rugby World Cup teams and was player of the RWC tournament in 1999. Tim gave us his thoughts on the forthcoming RWC in France. He also related to his playing days at club, state and international levels. Tim is busy these days with Channel 7 commitments and we appreciate his time given to our day. Many thanks Tim.

Other guests who ‘traded’ words on stage with Buddha were;

Emirates Western Force CEO Peter O’ Meara. Peter and Buddha go back to their playing days in Queensland and their rapport was obvious. Peter spoke of his three years here in the West and some of the Force objectives plus he put a very positive vibe around the reappointment of John O’Neill as the head of Australian rugby – noting not only was success of Wallaby rugby virtually reassured but also there will be a real focus and drive behind the growth and development of the game. Tai McIsaac and Jimmy Hilgendorf , two of our Wests Force players gave us an insight into their season past and where we are headed in 2008. Impressive to hear both rate the team goals when asked by Buddha “what next?”

Our Host and auctioneer Gary Sampson is a very well organized and efficient operator. Thanks for a job very well done again this year Gazza.

Thank you to John Hancock for his work on the memorabilia. Top quality items and magnificently presented – assuring great value for buyers and our club coffers alike. Ken Burgess supported the day well in several areas as did my wife Jos. David Hocking and Kevin Hays were busy in the lead up and during the day – thanks guys. Other contributions from Wal Jones, Vandy, Mike Burgess, Fin and more – thank you all. Table Captains you do a magnificent job – keep up the good work and expect a phone call or email about February 2008 as we get set to line up ‘another big day out’.

On a personal note I really do enjoy being involved with our club functions. This year has been ‘different’ without the effervescent Wellsy alongside but I’m sure he would be proud of the continued support you all give to this very important day in our club calendar.

All the very best to all Grades throughout the club for the remainder of the season.n.

2006 RESULTS
1st GRADE
Grand Final: Wests victorious over Nedlands by 15-14. With this victory we accomplished our fourth consecutive premiership and equalled the Rugby WA record by any club. To do this from fourth position and drill three great results in consecutive weeks against Associates (semi-final 35-22) and Palmyra (preliminary final 22-21) plus the big one over Nedlands was superb.
The start of the season was 'scruffy' - Pimms described it in more colourful language after the match - with the early beltings by Nedlands and Cottesloe so we saw our team show great character and desire to come back and nail the result. Coach Tony Ladbrrok and tight management staff of Colts Cowley, Al Ruddel and Bill Hunt did a great job supporting this group of players. Also thanks to Physios Courtney and Martin.
COLTS
Another on field success this year was our COlts (U/19's) side who played in the 1st division and made the Preliminary Final.
Wests won the most improved Colts team in the competition which augers well with several of their players now ready to play open grade for us in season 2007. Well done Gus and team.
2nd GRAGE
Sarted slowly but made a bug impact in rount two finishing equal fourth (unfortunately not on percentage) with some great results for coach Brad Lewis and boys. Bad had many of his players through the year play for ur clubs top side and his coaching synergies with Tony proved valuable to the club.
3rd GRADE
Didn't have a coach until season start, so when 'virgins' Richard Hyde and Paul Connelly decided to have a go it didn't take long for them to get an enthusiastic bunch together and go through the second round undefeated. They made the finals but lost 0-3 to Mandurah in a very tight match. They were the only non-district side to make the 3rd Grade finals. Some good talent in this side.
4th GRADE
Fronted with a rash of retirements so when Brd Downey scrambled a team together the season was already underway. These fellows enjoyed their season (as they have done 'forever') anda couple of results made the fort worthwhile. Thanks to some of the older talent like Rangi an Dwayne for assisting here.
